Learn The Guitar Chords

Learning the guitar chords is the most important lesson for the rhythm guitarist. This is where all the other lessons come together, such as the ability to find any note, on any string, anywhere on the fretboard. If you don't have this memorized yet, don't worry, because by the end of this lesson, you will.

You can learn more about how guitar strings are labeled in the guitar strings lesson. Also, you may want to touch on reading tab before you begin the chord lessons. I have added basic tab to show the finger placement.

Finger placement will probably be the most frustrating part of learning how to play guitar. The solution: practice, practice, practice. Memorize the chords and concentrate on smooth, fluid chord changes. I have added a chart to show finger placement. If needed, know that:

first finger - index
second finger - middle
third finger - ring
fourth finger - pinky

I advise to work on strumming and picking the chords, as it is common to use both methods. If either of these techniques are new to you, don't worry, I will also give instruction for this as well. Eventually you will want to work on alternate picking. This is consecutive downstrokes and upstrokes. However, I advise you be comfortable with straight up and down picking first.

You will also learn the major chord scales and minor chord scales. Scales build the foundation of music and set the mood. Scales are defined as a series of notes collected in ascending or descending order that make up part or all of musical works.
